HDPE vs ABS, Which Is Better?

  2022-09.01  Read:share:

ABS and HDPE are both popular thermoplastics on the market, which material is better? The following describes the differences between the two in terms of performance parameters, features, advantages and disadvantages, and application scenarios.
Left : HDPE
Right : ABS

1.Performance Parameters

Comparison of ABS and HDPE performance parameters
 ABS  material  HDPE
 4,100  Tensile Strength (psi)  4,000
 304,000  Flexural Modulus (psi)  200,000
7.7  Izod Shock (notch) (ft-  lbs/in of notch)  1.3
 177  Heat Deflection  Temperature @ 264 psi(°F)  172
 0.30  Water absorption (immersion for 24 hours) (%)  0.10
5.6  Coefficient of Linear Thermal Expansion (in/in/°Fx10-5)  7.0

2.ABS and HDPE Properties

Comparison of ABS and HDPE properties
Excellent impact strength  Good tensile strength
Good manufacturing and  processing properties  Low hygroscopicity

 Excellent aesthetic properties  Corrosion resistance
Good chemical resistance  Low temperature resistance
 Low thermal conductivity  Anti-uv
Low coefficient of friction  Excellent electrical insulation

Both HDPE and ABS have their own advantages, as well as their own disadvantages.

3.Disadvantages of HDPE and ABS

Disadvantages of ABS and HDPE
Not resistant to UV  not resistant to high temperature
Easy to age  Poor air permeability
Pollution from incineration  Low surface hardness
High water absorption  poor aging resistance
Poor dissolution resistance  Poor mechanical properties

4.Application

HDPE application: In application scenarios, it can be applied to: brewing lining, laboratory, welding water tank, welding special-shaped parts, appliance parts, seals, ice hockey boards, skid plates, cutting boards, sliding profiles, scrapers, guide rails, conveyor slides Block seat, fixed plate, assembly line star wheel, screw rod, compartment lining, dump truck compartment lining, cutting board, etc.
ABS application: commonly used in the production of hand model, the thermoforming of the inner box of the refrigerator, electronic and electrical manufacturing, medical and pharmaceutical, imaging equipment parts, architectural model making, auto parts, food industry parts and other fields. ABS plastic sheets are commonly used in dashboards, hubcaps, and body parts of automobiles because of their strength, low temperature resistance, and uneven surfaces that are not easily scratched. Professional 3D printers often use ABS plastic because of its lower melting point.
