UHMWPE and HDPE are commonly used polyethylene sheets in industry, with similar appearance and homologous base material, but the molecular structure is very different, and the performance and application scenarios are very different, which are the two most confusing materials in procurement and engineering design.

What is HDPE?

HDPE is a linear thermoplastic made by polymerizing ethylene monomer. It has very few branched molecules and a compact polymer arrangement, which is the core reason for its high density and stable rigidity.
In terms of molecular weight, conventional HDPE molecular weight ranges from 100,000 to 500,000 g/mol, with moderate molecular chain lengths, allowing the material to achieve a balance between strength and processing performance.
The density index is stabilized at 0.93~0.97g/cm³, and the texture is lightweight, even if it is immersed in water for a long time, it will not absorb water and deform quickly.

What is UHMWPE?

UHMWPE is ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, also belongs to polyethylene thermoplastic materials, the most iconic feature is the ultra-long winding molecular chain, molecular weight can reach 3.5 to 7.5 million g/mol, far more than ordinary HDPE.
The long molecular chains are intertwined and locked together, which is the underlying logic for UHMWPE to realize super wear and impact resistance, and is also the key to differentiate it from ordinary polyethylene.
The density of the material is about 0.93~0.94g/cm³, which is close to the density of HDPE, and it can float in the water, so it is difficult to distinguish the two kinds of sheets by weight alone.

UHMWPE And HDPE Core Differences In Detail

3. Processing and recycling performance difference

HDPE has good melt fluidity, injection molding, extrusion, blow molding, hot melt welding are all compatible, low difficulty in mass production processing, processing cost is cheap.
UHMWPE is almost non-flowing, can not be injection molding, can only be molded, plunger extrusion molding, processing procedures are cumbersome, easy to stick to the knife when machining, processing costs are higher.
At the recycling level, HDPE is a national standard No.2 recyclable plastic, the global recycling system is mature, and the utilization rate of waste recycling is high.
UHMWPE has too long molecular chain, which makes thermal degradation difficult, and the quality of recycling has declined significantly, so the recycling utilization rate of the industry is low.

4. Use temperature and cost

HDPE continuous use of temperature range - 50 ℃ ~ 100 ℃, minus 50 ℃ below the low-temperature environment of toughness decreases rapidly, easy to brittle crack.
UHMWPE low-temperature lower limit expansion to - 150 ℃, alpine open-air equipment, polar mining accessories preferred.
On the price of raw materials, HDPE is a general-purpose commodity plastic with low unit price, while the raw material cost of UHMWPE is 3~10 times of HDPE, and the initial purchase investment is higher.

5. Chemical resistance and weathering performance

Both acid and alkali resistance, resistance to organic solvents performance is equal, strong acid and alkali environment can be used stably.

Can HDPE replace UHMWPE?
